“We’ve always done it that way!”
The Six Most Expensive Words in School Governance
The State Government continues to invest heavily in state education and we all certainly look forward to the new schools, school modernisation and/or rebuilding this promises whatever our political leanings. Other changes in the wind may not be so widely embraced.
ASCIV has always supported the introduction of new (and sometimes not so new) ways of thinking in terms of governance models and education delivery. We also strongly support the nenewed focus on teacher qualifications and career paths.
Schools with effective governance and management structures will see all this as an exciting opportunity. Others may fear change and find it all a bit daunting. For all of them, ASCIV support can make a difference. We can assist councils to successfully face the challenges with “whole council” training and governance tools such as our on-line diagnostic and the new ASCIV guide.
Councils, on behalf of their school communities have the responsibility to play their part in ensuring that we all get the best possible value for this huge taxpayer funded investment in our children’s future.
In our visits to schools around the state, Stephen and I have been impressed by the many examples of whole school communities working together to create new futures for their schools and their students.
More and more school leaders, teachers, parents and community representatives are embracing worthwhile change and showing they are prepared to “think outside the square”.
They are already seeing positive results for their efforts. Change for change sake always carries a high risk of achieving nothing at all but change through consultation and concensus, within a framework of improved management and governance. is a different matter entirely.
